Lifeline's Queensland Flood Appeal
"Queenslanders need a Lifeline"
Possessions, memories, hopes and, most tragically, lives continue to be swept away in the floodwaters of Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Today, tens of thousands of Queenslanders will return to their devastated homes to learn they've lost everything.
The Queensland Flood Appeal has raised over $54 million so far - a testament to Australian generosity. But while emergency responders look to the immediate physical needs of flood victims, there is also a heavy emotional toll.
Since the floods began, our team has been in contact with major emergency responders and service providers, and they've told us there's an important gap that GetUp members can fill. Experts agree that depression, post-traumatic stress, and even suicide dramatically increase after natural disasters.1
In Queensland a rapid increase in mental health services is needed to cope with the despair many are experiencing upon returning to their flooded homes. Right now, Lifeline is bringing on extra staff - not just to handle the huge increase in crisis calls, but to offer face-to-face counselling to flood victims on the ground, many of whom are without phone service.
Lifeline needs urgent funds to provide these essential counselling services. Click below to make a tax deductible donation to Lifeline's Community Recovery Project:

Lifeline's Community Recovery Project is providing immediate relief to those suffering the trauma and stress of recent days, and will support individuals and families as they rebuild their lives in the weeks and months to come. One of their key services is financial counselling - developing a plan for financial recovery can make an enormous difference to a flood victims.
Lifeline's immediate goal is to get 50 to 100 new counsellors trained in 'psychological first aid' and into the field over the next 1 to 2 weeks.
So far, they've raised $34,000 to fund increasing services since this crisis began, but as part of a movement of 430,000 Australians ready to respond, together we can help them raise enough to reach out to thousands more Australians impacted by the floods. Click below to donate:

Through these times of heartbreak and human need, flood ravaged communities will need all the help and support they can get. We are developing other ways that members can help those in need by harnessing technology and GetUp's huge community - stay tuned in the coming days.
For now, helping Lifeline provide a hand to hold, a shoulder to lean on and a comforting voice is the small miracle we can provide for individuals and families struggling through a flood of despair.

Thank you for caring,
The GetUp Team
PS - If you or someone you know is experiencing an emotional crisis, in connection with the floods or otherwise, you can call Lifeline's 24 hour hotline on 13 11 14.

Global Bee Emergency
Hello Every1
Wow! Over the weekend half a million of us have signed up to save the world's bees. Let's get to a million and get the ban now
Silently, billions of bees are dying off and our entire food chain is in danger. Bees don't just make honey, they are a giant, humble workforce, pollinating 90% of the plants we grow.
Multiple scientific studies blame one group of toxic pesticides for their rapid demise, and some bee populations are recovering in countries where these products have been banned. But powerful chemical companies are lobbying hard to keep selling these poisons. Our best chance to save bees now is to push the US and EU to join the ban -- their action is critical and will have a ripple effect on the rest of the world.
We have no time to lose -- the debate is raging about what to do. This is not just about saving bees, this is about survival. Let’s build a giant global buzz calling for the EU and US to outlaw these killer chemicals and save our bees and our food. Sign the emergency petition now, and send it on to everyone and we’ll deliver it to key decision makers:

Bees are vital to life on earth -- every year pollinating plants and crops with an estimated $40bn value, over one third of the food supply in many countries. Without immediate action to save bees many of our favourite fruits, vegetables, and nuts could vanish from our shelves.
Recent years have seen a steep and disturbing global decline in bee populations -- some bee species are already extinct and last week we learned that some US species are at just 4% of their previous numbers. Scientists have been scrambling for answers. Some studies claim the decline may be due to a combination of factors including disease, habitat loss and toxic chemicals. But increasingly independent research has produced strong evidence blaming neonicotinoid pesticides. France, Italy, Slovenia and even Germany, where the main manufacturer Bayer is based, have banned one of these bee killers. But, Bayer continues to export its poison across the world
This issue is now coming to the boil as major new studies have confirmed the scale of this problem. If we can get European and US decision-makers to take action, others will follow. It won’t be easy. A leaked document shows that the US Environmental Protection Agency knew about the pesticide’s dangers, but ignored them. The document says Bayer’s "highly toxic" product is a "major risk concern to non target insects [honey bees]".
We need to make our voices heard to counter Bayer’s very strong influence on policy makers and scientists in both the US and the EU where they fund the studies and sit on policy bodies. The real experts -- the beekeepers and farmers -- want these deadly pesticides prohibited until and unless we have solid, independent studies that show they are safe. Let's support them now. Sign the petition below, then forward this email:

We can no longer leave our delicate food chain in the hands of research run by the chemical companies and the regulators that are in their pockets. Banning this pesticide will move us closer to a world safe for ourselves and the other species we care about and depend on.
With hope,
Bob per

The Cove- Help Save Japan's Dolphins
In The Cove, a team of activists and filmmakers infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It's critical that we get the word out in Japan. Once the Japanese people know we believe they will demand change.
Send a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and Japanese Ambassador to the United States Ichiro Fujisaki urging them to address this issue. Everyone who signs the letter will be able to have their name displayed in a widget that will be posted on top social networks, web sites and blogs in Japan. The widget will link to actions people there can take to make a difference.
